The ability to organically include affiliate links is a great path to many benefits. Given how important reviews are for consumers, this can be a very effective method. For affiliate marketing purposes, the author of the review will write about a product and then drop a link to where it can be purchased, or feature a product on their social media/blogging platform.

It is important to note, however, that StudioPress is now a subsidiary of WPEngine which is the company that actually does the web hosting on which StudioPress’s Genesis framework runs. The affiliate program only works with choosing the StudioPress framework and themes, not the actual hosting on WPEngine. WPEngine has a separate affiliate program for its hosting services, which yes, is a bit confusing.
More traffic means more potential customers and that means more sales. Diversify your traffic sources. Don’t rely exclusively on SEO for your traffic. Use social media, paid advertisement (PPC ads), email campaigns. Make sure your website is mobile-friendly too. Google updates sometimes can have a negative impact on sites even if they have quality content. And remember if you want your traffic to convert you must build trust first.
If you want to jumpstart your success: I really do recommend enrolling in Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. It has helped me SO much in terms of starting out and getting in the right mindset for affiliate marketing. The Facebook group is amazingly helpful, and I have heard great feedback from blogger friends who have taken it based on my recommendation. If you are a beginner, this course will definitely help you. To sweeten the deal, I’ll throw in a copy of my Affiliate Marketing for Travel Bloggers eBook for free if you buy the course from my affiliate link. Remember, there’s a 30 day satisfaction guarantee, so there’s no harm in giving it a try.
Great post – I’m a bit late in seeing this it seems!I have a question around how you assess the metrics and in turn success of these websites. It’s obvious where the money is coming in for most of them but Im wondering how you assess 50em.com? Its a great looking site but it has around 350-400 organic views a month and does not rank 1st, 2nd or 3rd for most keywords – not even its main target keyword -ontraport vs infusionsoft. Are you assuming its successful because of the high commission rates for these products and they might make 20 sales a month or is there other signs you see that indicate its a profitable site (or do you know the owner!)?
Sometimes, you need a good refresher about how successful actual people can be. People who post about their success, people who try to help others become successful, people who don’t care about their niche being undercut because they know they’re the best at what they do. I’ve tracked down case studies from five of these successful marketers, and that’s what I’m bringing to you today.

Affiliate marketing is a very large industry and has become a key source of online income for many thousands of professional bloggers. With more and more online businesses becoming involved in affiliate marketing, more opportunities have arisen for bloggers, like you and I, to make money with their blog. and to ultimately create passive income streams.

Quality content is the foundation of your website and so, you must focus on that with priority. Make sure that you create valuable content that has useful information and that relates to the audience. For example, instead of simply making a list of beauty products write reviews on each product that will compel the readers to click on the affiliate link and purchase the product.
An elegantly straightforward process, affiliate marketing via reviews, blogs, social media, and other platforms is a new frontier in marketing that’s just waiting to be utilized. Follow the tips included in this article, and you’ll be able to engage your audience, convert passive readers into active consumers, and enhance your paycheck one click at a time.
Ahh thanks for the kind words. Glad you found the post helpful. I would focus on building up a good base of content first before adding affiliate links, because like you said, some programs might not accept you if your blog is still so new. 2 posts is a nice start, but I’d definitely work your way up to 10-15 posts, enough to “fill up” the blog before you apply for affiliate programs. That’s just my opinion though! The other thing about starting too early is that you haven’t really established authority or a solid audience that trusts you yet, so the odds of readers making purchases through you is much lower as well. Focus on content first, then programs! The good thing is, you’ve taken Michelle’s course, which I thought was super helpful in terms of getting in the right mindset for affiliate marketing. Now that you know what sort of content works, you can get a good strategy set out from the beginning. 🙂 Best of luck!

"Who or what is Squarespace?" said a commenter on a British newspaper's website recently. That commenter had evidently not clicked on any of the wall-to-wall advertising on websites over the past three years for this website platform. Squarespace advertises itself as the perfect way to build whatever website you like, and this makes it a good affiliate marketing website builder. The upgrade to Squarespace 7 in 2014 brought a greater variety of templates, and now it is very easy for even a website-building novice to put together something memorable.

If you want to be a better basketball player you should watch some highlights of Michael Jordan. Similarly, if you want to create a successful affiliate site you should analyze other successful sites in your niche. To do this, put yourself in your audience’s shoes. Open up Google and type in the keywords they would use to find your site, then click through some of the sites on the first couple results pages.
Many top-tier online brands list their affiliate programs right on their website so you can find them easily. Some are self-administered, others are run through an affiliate marketplace, but you can sign up from the brand’s website. Like marketplaces, these large affiliate programs are free to join and easy for affiliate marketing beginners to navigate.

You are much better off with a smaller niche. So what’s a small niche? Well one of my in-laws has lived and traveled extensively to Spain. Whereas travel is a huge and highly competitive area, by narrowing it down to one country to write about you would have far less competition. If you really wanted to narrow it further, then you could even specialize in travel to the Costa del Sol region of Spain.

Give it all a try yourself: As a hopelessly stubborn person, I understand that sometimes you just want to try things out for yourself. No stress, friend! All these resources will still be around later, so if your gut tells you that it’s not time to buy a course or eBook, don’t force it. Test the waters for yourself and then see later whether or not you need the extra boost.
Do not limit your affiliate marketing to just promote products, but also recognize the needs of the client like what exactly are they looking for. Make sure the affiliate products that you offer are relevant to the audience for instance if you are running a fashion website the ads should be something related like beauty products, fashion apparel, home décor, etc. The more the products are relevant the more possibility that the audience will purchase them. So, focus on a niche market instead of offering everything under the sun.

Great website on Affiliate Marketing! Your website should be a must read for newbies starting out in Affiliate Marketing. You provide a ton of information for someone contemplating if Affiliate Marketing is for them. I wish I read your site before I got started. Your 10 strategies are right on! I couldn’t have said them better myself. I think the most overlooked strategy that you pointed out is “PATIENCE”. It is normal to want to succeed quickly but building traffic to ones site takes time and a lot of hard work too. You provide a lot of great content and visuals. Good job and I hope you succeed very well with your website.

The next option is called Postback URL tracking, or callback tracking as it’s also referred to. This method uses a server to server approach. It’s the most accurate way to track sales and leads, however, it’s more complicated than depending on cookies. It will require some extra technical skills to set it up. With this type of tracking, information is stored on the merchant’s server, and this means that no code needs to be placed on the advertiser’s website. If you are running multiple affiliate sites, postback tracking is the recommended.

I just LOVE your writing style, Christina! I recently purchased the Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing course, but have yet to really dig in. I had NO idea all of those crazy complications with Amazon! I’ve already been rejected once 😛 But luckily, though my ego was bruised, I pressed on and am now on round 2 (with no success so far..lol) Hopefully with this post and the course I will make something in the next 90 days!
This is a very common way to promote offers. For example, you will often see a blog post with links to certain products or services. If the reader clicks through and makes a purchase, the blog owner will make a commission. These in-text links blend in with other content on your site and are a great way of promoting an offer within your content, without being over-the-top salesy with banners.

With the right training, anyone can be successful in affiliate marketing. When I first started affiliate marketing back in 2009, I had no idea the type of life affiliate marketing would end up giving me. It’d be hard for Google to argue with this content not adding value. After all, some of the guides have received close to 10,000 shares and have been used by the brands themselves to educate their own customers. Generally speaking, each guide takes about 40-50 hours to produce, and is benchmarked to beat the best existing piece of content on the topic in virtually every aspect (from design and share-ability, to page speed and on-page SEO).
No matter how good your marketing skills are, you’ll make less money on a bad product than you will on a valuable one. Take the time to study the demand for a product before promoting it. Make sure to research the seller with care before teaming up. Your time is worth a lot, and you want to be sure you’re spending it on a product that is profitable and a seller you can believe in.
Of course, cost will be a factor when you choose your website builder but this may not be as straightforward as it seems. To have a website up and running you will need the website builder itself, hosting and a domain name so when choosing the builder for you this needs to be taken into consideration. Is the hosting free and how much do domain names cost? You may be willing to pay more if the training and support is high quality.
Last but certainly not least is SiteGround. SiteGround is perfect for WordPress enthusiasts because it offers some really amazing WordPress-specific features and 1-click free domain transfer. So they are ideal for anyone looking to change hosting platforms for an established site. They have a very low price point with plans starting $3.45 that includes a free domain, free website builder, free SSL, 10GB of storage space, and free email accounts. They offer a 99.99% uptime guarantee and are highly rated as one of the most reliable and fastest hosts on the internet.
When beginning your affiliate marketing career, you’ll want to cultivate an audience that has very specific interests. This allows you to tailor your affiliate campaigns to that niche, increasing the likelihood that you’ll convert. By establishing yourself as an expert in one area instead of promoting a large array of products, you’ll be able to market to the people most likely to buy the product.
Great article Vera. You outlined all major reasons why people fail in affiliate marketing and I completely agree with all of them. I think the main problem is that most affiliate marketers promote products they haven’t tried and don’t believe them to be really worth paying for. They think of money first before providing value. I also agree that ywhen you are just starting online you need to focus on one niche, one website only until you become successful. Jumping from product to product, from niche to niche is not a good start.

I want to say thank you for taking the time to focus on useful content going into future years, as opposed to regurgitating something you read out of a hard cover marketing book from 1991. The original reason I came here however, was looking for tips / information on a general structure for paying taxes reliably on affiliate earnings in addition to disclaimer examples. Ive searched through different key word combinations and due to financial diversity on a national scale I can understand why this information is scarce. That being said, as long as a solid disclaimer is made about the information being a rough guideline etc. I think it would be extremely useful as most start up affiliates don’t know a thing about VAT, or how to separate their take home earnings from the tax they owe. I am currently residing in Alberta, Canada for your reference, but any information or a lead you could give me would be most helpful.

In effect, VigLink works as the middleman between a publisher (blogger) and merchants by scanning the publisher’s content and automatically creating links to publishers that are chosen “in real time” based on their payout/conversation rates. This makes VigLink a very hands-off affiliate program for publishers who prefer to focus on content instead of managing their affiliate links.
When you visit an affiliate company, you’ll be able to choose between a free plan or one that comes with a monthly cost. The premium membership comes with more support, more websites, and a stronger connection to the affiliate marketing community, but if you’re at the point where you’re just dipping your toe in the water to see what it’s like, the free membership option comes with some support for the first week and enough freedom and tools to quickly create a basic website and get going.

I’ve just got to hear about affiliate marketing and am really a newbie to this matter. The post above was so great and helpful for a person like me. I also took a look at locationrebel which seemed very exciting to me. I wonder if those courses and blueprints are still applicable because as far as I’ve seen, the reviews and testimonials all refer to the year 2013. It was the only reason that hold me back from joining the Locationrebel. I would be very thankful if you help me with this matter.
Determining their target customer base is the first step in their overall marketing strategy. For example, you may choose to promote men’s skateboard clothing. From this niche, we can already safely determine that we want to target men, skateboarders and most likely the under 35’s. People in this age bracket are all statistically more likely to use social media apps, so that might be another thing to consider when deciding where to promote your content.
When you’re finding your audience, and finding ways to reach them, you are building yourself up as an authority. A lot of people say they don’t want to have their name out in the public. And that’s okay—you can build authority from behind the scenes. You can still build a following of people that will open your emails and check out your site. You can still get people to come back to you.

The saying goes that people eat with their eyes, well, people are also quite picky about how their content is presented. Standout guides aren’t just well considered and expertly written. They are designed expertly. Designs aren’t just there to dress up an article, they are practical. Everything from content flow to sign-up forms and social sharing buttons are considered when content is intentionally designed with a bit of thought. Hiring a web designer will get the best quality results, at a price. You don’t need to hire a web designer to turn your guide into something special.
Every affiliate program offers different commission rates (along with rules that you should know). For example, some programs give out 20% commission, but only on the exact product you posted on your site. In other affiliate programs, you’d receive commissions from any product sale the referred person bought from the store, as long as he/she completed a full checkout within a specific period of time. For example as an Amazon Associate, you are given a 24 hour cookie window.
