I’ve written about affiliate marketing before, but at this point, i would like to quickly remind everyone what affiliate marketing is. It’s the process of promoting another companies products/services and if people end up buying you earn a commission. You can join an affiliate network or affiliate with a company directly. Basically, you connect the consumer with a product. The better your marketing skills are, the more sales you will make.

I do find the rejections strange sometimes, and you are SO right that often there doesn’t appear to be a good reason. Just yesterday I got a rejection from a program I applied to months and months ago citing that “my site wasn’t a good fit”, but I had actually been accepted to them through CJ Affiliate when I first applied and have been generating pretty consistent sales haha. Well, in my personal experience, affiliate marketing makes up the largest chunk of my blog income. Since getting started back in October, I’ve made a few thousand dollars from affiliate marketing (including $1500 in the first 30 days!). The road to get there wasn’t easy though… affiliate marketing isn’t just about dropping links and hoping people will buy things. There is, in fact, a lot more strategic thinking involved, which brings us to the next major question:
How many words should be included in your keywords? Think about it this way. Long-tail keywords (3-5 words) have a narrower scope but are more likely to attract leads—quality over quantity. Short-tail keywords (1-2 words) usually cover a much broader topic, which can be both good and bad. It’s best to focus more on your long-tail keywords in order to really hone in on your site’s specificity and uniqueness. I’ve found that long-tail research tends to breed many short-tail options from within the longer phrases. If you start with “oak dining room tables” you’ll be able to break it down to “dining tables” and ultimately “home furniture.” That’s a simplistic example, but you get what we mean. If you start your keyword research too broadly you’ll struggle to rank and generate traffic.

Great post – I’m a bit late in seeing this it seems!I have a question around how you assess the metrics and in turn success of these websites. It’s obvious where the money is coming in for most of them but Im wondering how you assess 50em.com? Its a great looking site but it has around 350-400 organic views a month and does not rank 1st, 2nd or 3rd for most keywords – not even its main target keyword -ontraport vs infusionsoft. Are you assuming its successful because of the high commission rates for these products and they might make 20 sales a month or is there other signs you see that indicate its a profitable site (or do you know the owner!)?

I really want to make it in the affiliate marketing business I know it takes time, I am so determined but sometimes I just don’t know how to stand out from the rest it is really hard sometimes. I know it’s doable but I just haven’t found out how. It can be infuriating at times and stressful too but when I read things like this it reminds that I can do it. I hope I make it in this marketing business, I really do!

I understand too, that you must have placed ads within the Keyword Planner tool to retain ownership of your account. For an alternative free keyword research tool you can use Moz or for a paid keyword research tool, I use and recommend Keysearch.
