Affiliate marketing is still one of the most reliable ways to earn a recurring passive income online. It takes more work to build a profitable website than it did a few years ago, but it still can be done. You’ll need to put in a lot of effort at the beginning, but afterward you should be able to outsource most of the work and focus on other projects.

HI Dawn. Really useful article. Affiliate marketing is something I’ve tried on and off for years but as soon as it comes to keyword research, i block. i’m blind so understanding all the information that keywords research gives you is just soooo. difficult. and i don’t know how to choose longtail keywords. As a result I’ve always stuck to direct selling but I love to write and feel sure that if i got my head around keyword research and knowing how to pick words I could make a go of this. Any advice?
Love your lengthy article about ‘Why People Fail To Do Affiliate Marketing With Success’. I am currently in my 5th month of affiliate marketing and there is so much to learn. I can relate to many of the points. When I first installed Google Analytics, I would check it constantly and felt so depressed with the dismal figures. Now I try to focus more on building my content and only peek into GA once in every few days.
Most of the work in terms of background pictures and videos, insertion of images into articles, and placement of advertising, can be done with a drag-and-drop, meaning you shouldn't have to spend any precious time that could otherwise be spent devising killer content and getting people to visit your advertisers. In our humble opinion, Wix is the best website builder for affiliate marketing; the value-for-money is superb, as is the user interface for even a newbie.
Promote multiple affiliate products from different merchants. That way you are protecting yourself and your business in case something goes wrong with that product. For example, if you face problems receiving your payment from that merchant or if there are significant changes with that product (price changes, quality deteriorates) the effects on your business will not be devastating. Also if the product you are promoting doesn’t convert that well you can still make up for the loss from the rest of your products. A very common mistake people make is to believe that they can only monetize their website with Amazon and Google AdSense. They never look beyond those two and eventually, they get stuck. There are thousands of affiliate programs you can join in every niche. You just have to do a little research. You can learn more about affiliate networks on my previous post about online marketing tools.
"Who or what is Squarespace?" said a commenter on a British newspaper's website recently. That commenter had evidently not clicked on any of the wall-to-wall advertising on websites over the past three years for this website platform. Squarespace advertises itself as the perfect way to build whatever website you like, and this makes it a good affiliate marketing website builder. The upgrade to Squarespace 7 in 2014 brought a greater variety of templates, and now it is very easy for even a website-building novice to put together something memorable.
Even as an already successful full-time affiliate marketer, I still got suckered in. Most of them are selling snake oil (send me $5 and I’ll show you how to be rich!), but that doesn’t mean they are bad marketers. Many of them are fantastic marketers. They show you legitimate and real 6-figure checks, show you their fancy cars, show themselves hanging out with celebrities, etc.
SkimLinks is primarily for established content producers (bloggers) who want to monetize their content. With a powerful WordPress plugin and scripts for just about any website type, setting up SkimLinks is very easy. And because you have access to all offers on their platform after you’re approved, SkimLinks is very well designed for affiliates who don’t want to spend a lot of time fiddling around with settings and other fine-tuning.
Hey. Yes you can use just one website to promote multiple affiliate programs, but I’d say that your website should focus on just one niche. So you mention, SellHealth, that would lead me to believe your site is about health and fitness. I would then advise you to stick to that niche rather than promoting unrelated products like dog leashes and fashion accessories.

Thanks bro. Its been a while i visited your blog. I am happy to see that you changed the theme. Now your blog looks awesome.. I think now you are pro in word press. Affiliate marketing is the toughest way of earning money as of my experience. Being an affiliate marketer you should have knowledge about the kind of visitors to your blog. One should be very much careful while using adsense because chances of getting banned are very much high. Getting an approved affiliate marketing account is something like sipping a cup of coffee. It’s not about getting approved its about how you work on affiliate marketing,

Since publishers generate income from the traffic their website generates, they are tasked with marketing. The affiliate must attract potential customers to their content, and convince them that the merchant’s product is worth buying. Publishers market products to the consumer through a range of channels: digital billboards, social networks, and search engines using content marketing on websites or blogs. We’ll cover how this is done further along the article.
SkimLinks works very similarly to VigLinks in that it is designed for bloggers who don’t want to do a lot of hands-on work to participate in an affiliate program. SkimLinks also works much like VigLinks in that it uses a plugin or script to create dynamic links in your content to send visitors to higher paying offers from merchants. SkimLinks claims to work with over 24,000 merchants/advertisers.
Many a time have I talked about affiliate marketing on this blog – both as a method of marketing your product, and as a way to make money online. Regardless of the way you use it, affiliate marketing leads to (i) freedom and (ii) financial well-being… but only in one case: if/when you are successful. Otherwise, affiliate marketing can drain you financially and emotionally. I have seen the latter happen way too often not to mention it here.
I used to get suckered into get-rich-quick garbage. You know the ones I’m talking about. The “guru’s” that stand in front of their Lamborgini’s holding 6 figure checks, promising they will tell you their “secret” or “system” that of course, anyone can do with very little effort? Yeah, those guys. I’m sad to say, I got suckered into more than a couple of those.

It is a very good idea to use different product promotion strategies so you can figure out what is working and what is not. Try to do split testing and measure the performance of each campaign then take actions accordingly. Changing a few things here and there can increase your profit dramatically. Make sure to place the banner ads on different areas of your site’s pages. Some positions will make the ads more noticeable than others.

Affiliate Marketing Tip #9 – Create Original Content: There are a lot of article sites where you can get free content to use on your website or blog. There are free articles out there on almost any topic. But beware. Google looks for duplicate content. If they see an article on your website or blog that is identical to the content on others, they will penalize your site in the search results ranking. So always try for original content.
Hi Christina. I have been looking for answers about how to start affiliate through a travel blogging for more than 3 weeks and this post shined a light for me. Thank you! I still have a question about how and when to start applying to affiliate programs. I just opened my travel blog last week and had only 2 posts. Off course I have no established traffic and posts yet. I want to use affiliate links to start writing about reviews of hotels and places where I have visited, but I know my blog won’t be accepted by advertisers because I don’t have enough contents. I also took Michelle’s course and one of the chapters said to start affiliate marketing as soon as possible, but I don’t know how would you be accepted by advertisers at very very beginning?? Should I forcus on writing more posts first? And how many would be adequate to start applying to programs? Thank you for reading. Your blog is very helpful!!
Many affiliate marketers use paid advertising to generate additional traffic to their site and drive more sales. Paid advertising on social media is often a good place to start, as these networks tend to be more affordable. You may also want to consider taking out inexpensive banner ads on small niche sites. Depending on your niche, Google AdWords could also be a good option to drive some paid traffic to your site.

On one hand, long and ugly affiliate tracking links are a straight giveaway to people that you want to sell them a product (and people may be uncomfortable clicking on them). Therefore, making your link shorter and "nicer" looking will it give a more professional appearance. One of my favorite plugins for making links look "pretty" is the Pretty Links WordPress plugin.
To me, ease of use is the most important aspect of a website builder. It doesn’t matter how many whistles and bells a builder has if you cannot work out how to use it you will waste many hours of precious time trying to create what you want. Personal preference can come into play as some people like drag and drop applications whereas others prefer to create files within the builder or uploading them to the builder. This is where free trials can be a boon as you can try out the website builders and see which is the best fit for you.
FriendFinder is an adult-friendly network of dating websites that has a terrific affiliate marketing program, both in terms of customer service and commission rates. Because they rely heavily on affiliates to recruit new members, they treat their affiliates like true business partners. They have a solid reputation for payment and security, and have frequent special offers. Checking into your affiliate account at FriendFinder is always a fun experience, and often a profitable one.

ClickBank allows you to join for free, and the approval process is virtually automatic, so it’s a great choice for people entering the affiliated game for the first time. ClickBank has a ton of information, including FAQs, walk-throughs, and videos available, so the barrier to entry is quite low. There’s also a (paid) program called ClickBank University with courses and assistance from experienced marketers.
Don’t go insane and join a million at once… think first about what would make sense for you to endorse. If you’re a travel blogger for instance, becoming an affiliate for hotels, tours and travel gear may be appropriate. Most companies will have an affiliate program, or be part of an affiliate network. Your best bet would be a quick Google: “company + affiliate program”.

I do find the rejections strange sometimes, and you are SO right that often there doesn’t appear to be a good reason. Just yesterday I got a rejection from a program I applied to months and months ago citing that “my site wasn’t a good fit”, but I had actually been accepted to them through CJ Affiliate when I first applied and have been generating pretty consistent sales haha. Oh well! Guess we’ll never know the “inner workings” of it all, but thanks for reading Robert 😀
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which took effect on May 25, 2018, is a set of regulations governing the use of personal data across the EU. This is forcing some affiliates to obtain user data through opt-in consent (updated privacy policies and cookie notices), even if they are not located in the European Union. This new regulation should also remind you to follow FTC guidelines and clearly disclose that you receive affiliate commissions from your recommendations.
Once you’ve got a topic and possibly some products to promote, the next lessons you’ll want to go through are ‘Finding and Registering a Domain Name’ and 'What to Look for in a Hosting Provider.' These will give you a hand with setting up your own domain name and hosting, and then you should have some help from your hosting provider to install WordPress.
