What’s your passion? The subject that you talk, write and read about day-in and day-out is a good contender for your passion. It doesn’t have to be overly broad like wine reviews. A sharper focus, say West Coast Wine Reviews, can be a better place to start when learning how to affiliate market. In fact, a narrow focus can help your site appear high in the search engines and stand out in social media, which we’ll get to later. For now, start by listing the topics that interest you, starting with the ones you’re knowledgeable about.
There’s no point in lying about it: it’s not easy to make a lot of money through affiliate marketing. The best way to understand it is to think of it like a small business: you have to start at square one and build your business from the ground up. You have the advantage of not needing a business loan to begin with, and the fact that you can set your own hours for each day and each week, but you’ll need to invest a lot of time and effort into your affiliate marketing business before it will grow.
Fill your website with content that will be useful to the people who are interested in your niche, and place your affiliate links throughout in the most relevant places. That way when someone interested in your content clicks your link, they go to a sales page for a product that they might also be interested in, and if they buy it you get a commission!
Well, in my personal experience, affiliate marketing makes up the largest chunk of my blog income. Since getting started back in October, I’ve made a few thousand dollars from affiliate marketing (including $1500 in the first 30 days!). I recently did a review of a popular ebook that is a month long discipline program. I went about it by doing the actual program and documenting everything. At the end of the month I wrote up a 2700 word article summing up the whole experience.

A common mistake affiliate marketers do is trying to create websites in many different niches in an effort to generate income quickly. That almost never works. It’s just to much work. Building affiliate websites with thin content that lack authority is a strategy doomed to fail. Plus if you are not passionate about your niche you will run out of ideas pretty quickly. Try to focus on one or two niches and write content your audience will find useful. Write about topics you are familiar with and create quality content. You can’t stay focused or consistent if you are working on multiple niches at the same time. Choosing the right niche for you is very important but it’s also just the beginning. Don’t scatter your efforts, develop your content marketing strategy, promote your website and offer solutions to your reader’s problems. Becoming an authority in your niche is the most effective way to increase your sales. 
Sometimes, you need a good refresher about how successful actual people can be. People who post about their success, people who try to help others become successful, people who don’t care about their niche being undercut because they know they’re the best at what they do. Did you know that you can now launch a site devoted entirely to marketing another brand’s products? Several years ago, this wasn’t really a thing. Fast forward to 2017, and affiliate marketing accounts for a $5 billion market in the U.S. alone. Though still in its infancy, affiliate marketing is quickly becoming a reliable side revenue stream for many sites, and has even spawned several dedicated affiliate sites that are turning huge profits.

At this stage, you’ll likely be wondering how you generate money. There are different types of affiliate marketing compensation. It depends on how the company or affiliate program chooses to compensate you the publisher for your work generating traffic and sales. Most of the time, you can expect a share of the revenue, meaning that you get an agreed percentage of the sales you help generate. There are alternative arrangements.

I do have a question, though, you state that longer articles are better (which I understand). I’ve found a niche that has a few keywords with very high CPC (no real affiliation program can be used though), with a few thousand searches a month. For each keyword I could probably 500 words on each keyword. Should I do this, or should I compile them into one big article? They keywords can be linked to each other, for example, “how to start running”, “basics of running” etc. (Those obviously aren’t the keywords, and more can be written on those). What would you recommend?
There are multiple ways to go about content creation, from products reviews and how-to posts. Another way to organically reach the right audience is to create an engaging blog that addresses news, updates, and fixes about the industry where your product fits. Customers looking for industry-specific news are more likely to stumble upon your website and hence catch a look at your products as well.
If you’re struggling to think of a topic, chances are, you’ve not defined your goals properly. Be sure that you have a real reason to write long-form content. Stick to the goal-before-topic rule to avoid going wrong. You’re looking to encourage the outcome you’re looking for. Think about the sorts of topics that will reach your audience and make them respond.
