Given that Amazon is the world’s largest internet marketplace, their affiliate program is used by a great many sites. In 2015 Amazon.com revenue surpassed $100B, and it’s affiliates likely generated $10B of it. This doesn’t mean Amazon is necessarily the best fit for your site though. Commission rates are fairly low (4-10%), which means if you’re promoting a cheaper product it could take you awhile to see positive ROI. That said, Amazon is a good option to explore because of its sheer quantity of items and brand reputability.
Thank you for your message. I approve Clickbank 100%. Whilst there are some questionable products on there, there are other great products that you can promote. I also wrote a comprehensive Clickbank affiliate marketing guide here on my blog if you have not yet seen it. https://iamdawn-marie.com/clickbank-internet-marketing/. Hope it’s useful to you 🙂
Let’s start by looking at the competition. Where are their gaps? If you can beat it, this is a good place to start. By now you should have an understanding of your target audience. This is the time to think about what makes them tick. Use anything you have to build a picture. Look into keywords and search queries to see what people are looking for, and any existing analytics you have. If you’ve written a well performing blog article, is there room to expand on that topic?
HI Dawn. Really useful article. Affiliate marketing is something I’ve tried on and off for years but as soon as it comes to keyword research, i block. i’m blind so understanding all the information that keywords research gives you is just soooo. difficult. and i don’t know how to choose longtail keywords. As a result I’ve always stuck to direct selling but I love to write and feel sure that if i got my head around keyword research and knowing how to pick words I could make a go of this. Any advice?
Affiliates can earn commission on a wide selection of products and services. Be sure to check out their terms and conditions to learn more about each commission rate. Their great brand recognition leads to high conversions and more money for their affiliates. Godaddy uses Commission Junction to run their affiliate program and were voted Commission Junction’s Technology and Services Advertiser of the Year in 2017.
Fact is, the vast majority of people fail to do affiliate marketing with success and I showed you some of the most common reasons why above. But people don’t fail because the affiliate business model is for the birds. They fail for internal reasons that lie in their own behavior and mindset. Actually, that’s good, because everyone can change his own behavior and way of thinking, if he really wants.
Just 11 months after starting my site, and just 5 months after earning my first commission, I was earning about $2k per month online. Things were really snowballing at this point. I decided to take yet another chance in life. I quit my full-time job as a truck driver and got a part-time freelancing job to help supplement my own affiliate marketing income until I could grow it further.
Hey, thanks for the great post. I’ve been following Pat Flynn and love his “give and it shall be given unto you” attitude..my perception anyway. At 50, with a high school education, I’m trying to learn affiliate marketing from information online. What I’ve gleened so far is to focus on giving the best, most honest information, like your Parents would give you. In exchange for your efforts rewards will come.
If you actually use the product and get results with it, then sharing a case study or your personal experience can be one of the most effective ways of selling those products to your audience. As you build a more responsive list of email subscribers and buyers and your reputation, merchants may offer you “free” samples of e-books or other products.

Are there related affiliate partners? Remember that list of 30 products mentioned above? You need to see if you can find companies, called affiliate partners, which will pay you to promote those types of products through your blog content. Researching this up front is a key factor in deciding if your niche can be profitable. We’ll explore ways to find affiliate partners in Step Two below.
When you promote a product you also promote the person or the company who is behind the product so try to choose wisely. You don’t want your visitors to go and buy a product following your advice then come back unhappy. Do you think that this visitor will come back to your site and take your advice again? Most likely no; this can hurt your credibility in the long run. Usually, websites/company that offer good customer service will have better customer satisfaction so try to stick with promoting their products.
The real trick to succeeding with your first affiliate marketing website is to create a steady flow of content over an extended period of time. If you write interesting, engaging, and unique content for your website consistently for a few months, you will begin to gain search engine traffic. I’ll continue this guide on how to create your first affiliate marketing website by giving some content tips.
Great article! Number 4 is definitely something that many affiliate marketers fall into. So, for instance, lots of people were making good money selling top tier products through MOBE (My Online Business Education) until the FTC, using its Gestapo tactics, shut everything down overnight. Guilty first before proven innocent seems to be the prevailing motto.
To find out if there’s internet and social traffic surrounding your niche, try doing some search engine keyword research and search for related topics on social media. If keywords related to your topic have large search volumes, and if you find related Pinterest boards, Facebook pages and Instagram streams with lots of followers, you have an audience.
StudioPress itself is somewhat of a niche product as it is targeted to existing WordPress users who found setting up and managing a WordPress site too difficult or time-consuming. StudioPress prides itself on being easy to use, but their main claim to fame is that their hosted websites are “faster and more secure” than other WordPress hosting companies as well as using the “Genesis framework” which is supposedly more SEO friendly than other WordPress builds.

SiteGround has a very user-friendly cPanel with free installation of apps. Their backend is completely drag and drop so you can quickly get your site up and running. They do not have any special marketing credits but they offer tons of customer support and guidance to help you craft the perfect marketing plan. Now that you’ve done all the upfront research—finding your niche and exploring keyword possibilities—and setup your website, the next step in the progression is to start filling your site up with content, right? Well yes, but in order to do that you must find specific products to write about. Let’s get to the meat and potatoes part: selecting the products.
Advertising itself as the easiest way to build a website, you'll have no trouble finding something that can get you off the ground and into affiliate marketing within a day on Weebly. The user interface is almost completely drag-and-drop, and there is a range of themes depending on how you wish to display your information. Choose the theme carefully, as it will inform what you can do with your site, and you'll need to choose something that gives your advertisers the key space they deserve.
I’ve written about affiliate marketing before, but at this point, i would like to quickly remind everyone what affiliate marketing is. It’s the process of promoting another companies products/services and if people end up buying you earn a commission. You can join an affiliate network or affiliate with a company directly. Basically, you connect the consumer with a product. The better your marketing skills are, the more sales you will make.

No matter how good your marketing skills are, you’ll make less money on a bad product than you will on a valuable one. Take the time to study the demand for a product before promoting it. Make sure to research the seller with care before teaming up. Your time is worth a lot, and you want to be sure you’re spending it on a product that is profitable and a seller you can believe in.
It is important to note, however, that StudioPress is now a subsidiary of WPEngine which is the company that actually does the web hosting on which StudioPress’s Genesis framework runs. The affiliate program only works with choosing the StudioPress framework and themes, not the actual hosting on WPEngine. WPEngine has a separate affiliate program for its hosting services, which yes, is a bit confusing.
Great stuff here Sean – thanks for all of these insights and sharing some best practices when it comes to affiliate marketing. I’ve never been comfortable giving it a shot, but after reading this post and your perspective on how and when to do it, I may just have to give it a try. Especially considering I’m already mentioning and recommending services and products on my site, I’m just not getting the potential rewards associated with doing so. Thanks again.

ClickBank allows you to join for free, and the approval process is virtually automatic, so it’s a great choice for people entering the affiliated game for the first time. ClickBank has a ton of information, including FAQs, walk-throughs, and videos available, so the barrier to entry is quite low. There’s also a (paid) program called ClickBank University with courses and assistance from experienced marketers.
